Green city on the Oker and its surroundings

In Braunschweig, there are a number of green oases which are perfect for slowing down and refuelling energy. From the city centre you can reach the Oker, which flows around the historic core of Braunschweig, within a few minutes. Both banks are flanked by peaceful natural areas and parks – ideal for strolling, cycling and jogging, or for barbecues with friends and family. The Oker itself provides possibilities such as canoeing, stand-up paddling or leisurely raft trips. Numerous options for leisure and recreation enable a superb balance between life and work, thereby ensuring the special quality of life in the Lion City.

Leisure and recreation in the surrounding areas

The short distances also provide an advantage when exploring the surrounding countryside during excursions or sporting activities. The conservation area and European nature reserve Riddagshausen, with its numerous – sometimes rare – animal and plant species, its lakes and the idyllic little village of the same name, is a natural pearl nestled in the immediate vicinity of the city. And after only around 30 minutes’ drive, you can reach the Harz region, which is loved by nature enthusiasts and ramblers in both summer and winter.

Sport is “in”!

At the weekends, you will find sports fans at the games of Eintracht Braunschweig, the Basketball Löwen or the American football professionals, the Lions. In addition, the Lion City offers further high-level and popular sporting events. Examples include the ATP Tennis Tournament which, every year, offers tennis at its best, as well as the „LöwenClassics“, which provide exciting show-jumping and dressage events of the highest calibre.

Around 60,000 Braunschweig residents are actively involved in the more than 230 sport clubs in the city – from pure recreational fun through to serious competitive sport with participation in national and international competitions.
